Tasting Ideas

Bring the learning into the kitchen and explore ways to enjoy what you grew!

  • Try what you grew in a recipe. Check out Classroom Kitchen from Teach Nutrition for inspiration.
  • Chop fresh herbs like basil, dill, or chives and stir them into butter. This herbed butter makes a tasty spread!
  • Make your own butter from scratch by doing the Butter in a Jar STEM activity.

Science Highlights

Use these points to explain what happened during the experiment.

Plant growth

  • Seeds get a signal to start growing when they are planted in moist soil. This is called germination.
  • The seed will develop roots, which grow down into the soil in search of water and nutrients. The roots also help the plant stay upright as it grows.
  • The outer layer of the seed splits and a shoot grows toward the surface. The seedling appears, breaking through the soil. The seed has now sprouted.
  • The seedling grows leaves. The leaves begin to make food for the plant using sunlight, water and air.
  • The plant will continue growing and will produce vegetables, fruit or flowers.

Math Activity

  • Invite students to record how many seeds were planted and compare that number to the number of plants that grew. What percentage of seeds turned into plants?
  • Germination rate is the average number of seeds that sprout over a specific time period. How does this compare to your experiment results?
